With so many commitments in both our work and personal lives, it’s easy for the line between work and personal life to become blurred. But because today we are living busy lives then ever before, maintaining a healthy work-life balance has never been so important. But how do you know if your work-life balance is off? And more importantly, how do you fix it?

3 Indicators your work-life balance is off:

1. You’re constantly stressed!

A small amount of stress isn’t an issue; in fact some people perform best under stress. But when you are constantly under stress because of your work tasks or workload, your ability to focus is affected, your body starts to shut down and you just can’t produce your best work.

2. Work is constantly on your mind

Bringing work home; working late; working on weekends. If you’re sitting there nodding your head in agreement; then your work-life balance is off. Work and home life are separate for a reason! You need time to switch off and recharge without the distraction and interruption of work.

3. You’re having trouble sleeping

Do you find your mind constantly ticking with work thoughts when trying to fall asleep at night? If that sounds like you, chances are your work-life balance is off. Once you leave work, so should your mind. Its recommended that we get 8 hours of sleep each night to allow our body’s and mind’s to function at their best each day; so if your not getting that each night, your work-life balance could be off.

So if your now realising your work-life balance isn’t as great as you thought, try these tips to maintain a healthy work-life balance:

  • Use a diary and, as well as planning your general meetings, tasks etc., schedule in some ‘you’ time. And treat that time like you would treat a business meeting. You wouldn’t skip it would you?

  • Create boundaries between work and personal life – leave work at work!

  • Maintain a healthy lifestyle – 8 hours of sleep, balanced diet and exercise are key!

  • Take a break from technology – whether that’s just on weekends, or you just make a promise to yourself to switch off all technology (yes, including emails) after 8pm each night.

  • Practice relaxation techniques like yoga or meditation.
